KumbhalGarh – A love affair

posted in: Road trip | 0

A love affair that started on one of my trips to Udaipur. During dinner one night at an upscale restaurant on Palace Road which thankfully was a kind of place that does not perpetually showcases Octopussy, the lovely owners knowing my fascination of travelling recommended a place that I was literally commanded to go. And what a recommendation it turned out to be and what a marvelous site it unfolded.

Badal Mahal

A world heritage site. The site is the largest fort in India. It comprises of hundreds of temples within the fort complex. The largest wall in India spanning 36 km runs along the periphery of this fort. It is also proclaimed to be the second largest Wall of the World behind the Great Wall of China. A wall so huge that multiple horses can run on it at the same time. The wall also offers panoramic views of the green Mewar region.

The Wall

Welcome to the KumbhalGarh fort. The grandest of all forts in India. A fort befitting the grand Rana Kumbha. A fort that needs to be experienced. As is the case with all Rajput forts, numerous tales of bravery are associated with this fort. The fort bore witness to the birth of the finest warrior of Mewar, Maharana Pratap.

The fort

A beautiful symphony of storytelling coupled with classical music lifts up the evening light and sound show to dizzying heights.  The show’s essence is a fort telling its own story in a very youthful manner. A show that makes great use of classical music along with the full expanse of the fort to create a mesmerizing effects on the viewer. Brilliant.

This is the best bit about travelling. Travelling without any set plan. Travelling as the locals suggest for they know the best. Yes, even better than google or the guide books.
