There is something beautiful about Hindu mythology. The gods and goddesses are based on various animate and inanimate forms of the world. This leads to absolutely stunning idols in a multitude of forms. One such form is Varaha and one of the most imposing Varaha sculpture can be found at the Rock cut caves of Udaygiri. Udaygiri Rock cut caves are close to Vidisha with around 10-15 caves hosting various images of Hindu Gods.
The most magnificient of the sculptures is of Varaha rescuing Bhoodevi from being submerged in the ocean. Now Bhoodevi is not an ordinary mortal like you and me, but hold your breaths now, is the mother earth itself.
The sculpture looks imposing with the mighty Varaha rescuing the bhoodevi(goddess mother earth) from the ocean. I am glad that Varaha managed to save her after some unscrupulous elements had submerged her into the ocean. Apparently it took a huge amount of untiring effort from Varaha to rescue Bhoodevi and save the day for all of us. Think about it, our lives would not happened if the above rescue act had failed. Varaha and this sculpture does deserve a big round of applause.
Visit the place only if you are a huge lover of Hindu Mythology. The caretaker though keeps most of the caves locked. Just get after his life to ensure that he open the caves. MP tourism has also opened a resort – Jungle Resort Udaygiri near to the caves which offer water activities. You can stay at Udaygiri if you want, however the place is best visited in a day trip as it is a short detour from Sanchi.
